The role of stocks in a diversified portfolio
We believe stocks provide significant opportunities for long term growth of investment
portfolios. In the short-term however, the volatility of stocks can present significant
risks to principal. Historically the stock market has experienced a complete up
and down cycle approximately every five years. Therefore, we do not recommend significant
exposure to equities for accounts that have a time horizon (or anticipated need
for substantial principal withdrawals) of less than five years.
For long term portfolios we believe stocks provide better opportunities for growth
with less risk than any other investment alternatives, including bonds, real estate,
precious metals, foreign currency, and artwork.
Our equity investment performance objective is to outperform the markets over time,
without exposing our clients to excessive market risk. We do this by taking a disciplined
approach to investing in high quality stocks with superior long-term performance
characteristics. We resist the temptation to speculate in lesser known companies,
unproven startups, or trendy investment fads.
